H1N1 & Seasonal Flu Update
As we receive shipments of H1N1 vaccine, we will announce on our phone message available appointment times.
Remember, this vaccine, as well as any other vaccine, is given by appointment only. We will not give vaccine on a walk-in basis, and we discourage any kind of walk-in appointment in general.
We recommend that all of our patients receive the H1N1 vaccine. It is made the same way that our seasonal vaccine is made every year, so we regard it to be safe. If your child already has had a seasonal flu SHOT, you can get the H1N1 vaccine, AS EITHER THE SHOT OR NASAL SPRAY, AT ANY TIME. If your child already received Flumist, the nasal spray vaccine, the h1N1 shot may be given at any time, but a nasal H1N1 vaccine must be at least 30 days after receiving the first one.
Remember, if you wish for your school-aged child to receive the vaccine for H1N1, you should get it through the schools. At our office, we will only be giving the vaccine to children aged 6 months to 5 years who are not yet in school because of our very limited supply.
Prevention of illness by washing your hands frequently or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer is still important. Keep hands away from the eyes, nose, and mouth as that is how the virus enters the body and causes infection. Cover the nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.
Symptoms of the flu are fever greater than 100 degrees, headache and body aches, runny nose, cough, and sore throat. If you or your family members experience these symptoms, please isolate yourself from others and do not send children back to school or daycare until they are fever free fro 24 hours without the use of fever medicines.
Testing and treatment for the flu is rarely indicated. Patients definitely should be seen if they are having difficulty breathing, are not drinking fluids well, have a bluish discoloration of the skin or rash, or are so irritable that they do not want to be held. As always, if you request your child to be seen, we will schedule an appointment.
We expect to receive the remainder of our shipment of seasonal flu vaccine by the end of November. We understand people are very anxious to get this vaccine as well. Please be assured, this will still give us plenty of time to give our patients the seasonal flu vaccine well in advance of the flu season which usually starts in January or February. Plan to check back about this vaccine in mid November.
